Iroquois Class Destroyer

Annapolis Class Destroyer Escort

(DDH-265)

Canada

DDH 265 HMCS Annapolis
DDH 266 HMCS Nipigon

The follow-on class to the St. Laurent class DD, the 60's built Annapolis class was built to incorporate the hanger fit, along with a Variable Depth Sonar (VDS).  In 1982 and 84, both ships went through DELEX, DEstroyer Life EXtension, a refit which equipped the Nipigon with ETASS Passive Towed Array.  In DC and Merc, these ships were paid off in 96 and 98, but in Twilight, they are still afloat and sailing.  They were the last steam powered warships of the Canadian Navy.  They are small for a Destroyer, and were originally classified as Destroyer Escorts.

DDG 283 HMCS Algonquin

Built in the early 70's to replace the aging WWII era Destroyers, the TRIBAL class were to be replaced in the late 80's.  Once tensions began to mount, the class was retrofitted (Tribal Update and Modernization Project or TRUMP) with a single stack, removal of the aft mortar, reduction of main gun to the 76mm autocannon, and the VLS missiles placed just aft of the breakwater.  Before TRUMP, the gun was placed here.

The Iroquois Class carry two maritime helos, one RHIB and a zodiac.  They are designed as a command and anti-aircraft platform, and thus only have active SONAR, with no passive array.  Average for a Destroyer, the 280's are taller, though share the same length and displacement as the Halifax CPF.

DDG 285 HMCS British Columbia
DDG 286 HMCS Alberta
DDG 287 HMCS Newfoundland
DDG 288 HMCS Manitoba
DDG 289 HMCS Saskatchewan

Basically an extended CPF, the Provincial Class Destroyer was chosen to replace the aging TRUMP DD's due to its cost effectiveness.  Although called a multi-platform ship, the Provincial Class is limited in its ASW capability, and focuses more as a command and air defense ship.

VLS has been added between the gun and the bridge, and a new radar mast has been added to capitalize on the 3D radar system newly fitted.

The Lake Superior class is designed as a Command and Control platform and doubles as a land attack destroyer. The other components of the Renaissance Project are the Lake class Air Defence Frigate, Bay Class multi-purpose Frigate and the River class OPV.

The Lake Superior class also carries a platoon of naval infantry from the 1st Royal Naval Infantry Regiment of Canada who can act as boarding party or a beach assault force.
