Week 1 - January 2nd to 8th 1898
Sunday - We arrived at the outpost on the morning of
the 2nd. Our
supplies were
unloaded into the building and temporary shelters were
constructed. The
heat is most unbearable.
I organized the men into work details. Four details will be
set to building
more permanent
structures, one will perform sentry duty, and one will hunt
to augment our
food supply. Work
will begin on Monday.
The following Work Details were formed:
The Event die roll came up a "4" so no event occurred in
week 1.

Next, the weather was determined for each day of the week. The results were:
Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4 - Hazardous | 3 - Hazardous | 9 - Dangerous | 7 - Hazardous | 2 - Hazardous | 4 - Hazardous | 0 - Dangerous |
Tuesday - The effects of the weather struck down privates Ranjit Singh and Bela Singh. They collapsed early in the afternoon and despite our best efforts by morning they had expired. They will be sorely missed.
Each rolled a "1" on their D6 roll for heat exhaustion. Both were given a unit of medicine, but their severity rolls of "9" and "0" respectively, along with the "+2" modifier for the "Dangerous" Heat Index sealed their fate.
Wednesday - I have decided to limit work to « day on very hot days and suspend work completely on extremely hot days. It is hoped that this will reduce the chances of heat exhaustion.
On those days that only « of the day is worked, it takes 2 men working to equal 1 man/day of work. I rounded down to the nearest man/day of work, but « man/days can be kept track of if it is preferred.
Saturday - The reduction of work during the hot days has lessened but not eliminated the effects of the heat. We still have daily cases of heat exhaustion, though they are not as severe.
Though we are not as far along as I had hoped, still we have started 4 barracks buildings.
Listed below is the amount of work done on each barracks:
Barracks #1 - 37 man/days
Barracks #2 - 41 man/days
Barracks #3 - 39 man/days
Barracks #4 - 27 man/days
The differences in man/days completed for the first three was caused by men dropping out due to the heat.
During the week the following supplies were used:
224 units of food were collected by hunting. This resulted in 23 D6 rolls for ammo usage (224/10=22.4 rounded up to 23). The total of the 23 rolls was 72.
The loss of 10 units of food was the result of a sentry becoming sick. This left the sentry work detail short one man for one day. The result was a "+2" modifier on the theft roll (one man short for 1 day). A "5" was rolled and with the +2 the effect was 1D6 + 10 units of food stolen. A "1" was rolled for the amount stolen resulting in 10 units of food lost.
Week 2 - January 9th to 15th 1898
The work parties were continued as before. The heat was
not as bad as
last week, but the
men still suffered. Is seems that one or two men are
reporting sick daily,
even though we are only
working half days. I don't know if we will get enough
shelter built before
the rainy season. It
rained Saturday, but this only made the climate more
uncomfortable.
The Event die roll came up a "5" so no event occurred in
week 2.

Even with the heat, we made good progress with our construction. Three of our buildings are two-thirds complete and the fourth is half done. The hunting this week was not as good. We only saved a little over two days of food.

I ordered the work details to continue as they had last
week. On Monday
a extraordinary
event occurred. A half starved native staggered into camp
claiming to be a
porter for an
expedition that was lost somewhere north of our outpost.
Some of the
locals vouched for the
fellow, so I felt compelled to investigate.

The Event die roll came up a "1" so an event occurred in week 3. Rolling 1D6 to determine the day of the event, a "1" was rolled which put the event on Monday. Next, 2D6 were rolled to determine which event occurred. A "2" was scored on each die so Event #22 was used.
After determining the event, a target square had to be
located. First
the horizontal axis was
located. 1D6 was rolled for the tens. A "4" was rolled
giving a result of
10. A D10 was then
rolled for the ones. A "6" was scored which was added to
the 10 indicating
column 16 on the
map. For the vertical axis, 1D20 was rolled. A "2" was
scored, indicating
row B. The target
square is, therefore, B16.
Next, the weather was determined for each day of the week. The results were:
Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
6 - Hazardous | 5 - Hazardous | 3 - Hazardous | 2 - Hazardous | 5 - Hazardous | 4 - Hazardous | 1 - Hazardous |
I assigned the following men to search for the lost expedition:
20 porters were also hired from the nearby village. The mission party was allotted the following supplies:
Sgt. Allen was taken off sentry duty to lead the mission party and the four privates were taken from the work detail constructing barracks #1.
We wished our friends good luck as they disappeared up the trail to the north. I do not know when we will see them again. They have about a months provision, I hope they are back by then.
The weather was about the same as last week, and had the same effect on the men. I myself succumbed to the heat on two different days. Work was continued on the construction projects. One of the barracks was finished and is ready to be inhabited.
The following amount of work was done on each
barracks:

I rearranged work groups this week so that we could
finish up the other
three barracks. It rained on Sunday. The heat was extreme
all week,
except wednesday. The conditions are taking a terrible
toll on the men. 8
men were sick this week from the heat. On Monday a tragic
event occured.
Private Chatter Singh was attacked and killed by a
rhinoceros while
hunting. He was an excellent shot and will be sorely
missed.

When hunting on Monday, Chatter Singh rolled a "6" then a "1" which triggered a hunting event. Event "3" was rolled up, a charging rhinoceros 2D6 inches away. For the distance "snake eyes" were rolled, starting the beast only 2 inches from the hunter. He got off one shot that missed (die roll of 14)and was able to dodge the initial charge. The bearers that were with Pvt. Chatter bolted. In the second round of combat Chatter fired wide again. the Rhino was able to charge home and the private was crushed beneath its feet.
